[...] Let me first reflect on why this song means a lot to me: Before covid of course, I spent my lunch period in the choir room hanging out with friends who also like to find their "second home" there. So, it was almost as if I was blessed with such a wholesome, kind, interesting group of people. To finally hear this (by the way, very beautiful) composition manifest itself even during our collective struggle was a green light that reminded me that there is a place where we all belong.
Going back to the day you came to the choir room, it was rather enchanting that a composer had taken the time and dedication to write a song inspired by our own message. There was a warm atmosphere because someone who was outside of the Irvine High School sphere of influence had come to join us and be included in the process of expressing our message through song.
Being part of the constructive critique and modification of the music was a very unique experience. It was different from the usual sight reading and pencil markings that we did in class. It had a greater purpose, and like blacksmiths pounding away at scorching metal, we embraced this opportunity to make the best of what we had.
Making sure that every note, rest, and harmony (the musical aspects) flowed together felt like making sure everyone in the choir program had a place to connect with the rest of us. Revising some of the lyrics felt as if we were carefully crafting a letter to be sealed in a golden envelope which would carry a message of welcome and unity.
Thank you for this very unique and special experience!
